Angola accounts for over 40 percent of Portuguese wine exports

“Angola is, without doubt, the main market for Portuguese wines in terms of exports,” Anunciação told Portuguese news agency Lusa on the sidelines of the 5th annual Portuguese wine tasting event in Angola.

The event brought together hundreds of people and 80 wine producers who presented more than 400 wines from all of Portugal’s demarcated regions.

Noting that in 2012 Angola had bought around 680,000 hectolitres from Portuguese wine producers, Anunciação said that for Portuguese producers the Angolan market was of growing importance. Last year, for example, the market posted growth of 16.8 percent by value and 9 percent by volume year on year.

“These figures show that not only is consumption of Portuguese wine growing but that the trend is to consume better quality wine,” the manager said, adding that Vinhos de Portugal planned growth of 19 percent in value by 2014.

This annual wine tasting event was held just 24 hors after wine company Sogrape Vinhos also hosted a similar event in Luanda, presenting wines from the demarcated region of Douro, in northern Portugal.
