Late Bottled Vintage (LBV)

Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Ports are the port wines from years that are not quite deemed good enough to make true vintage port, but the quality is nonetheless generally good. They are aged for between four and six years (in casks), and the best ones will have been bottled without being filtered, so that the wine throws a sediment and requires decanting. Some companies filter their LBVs in order to avoid the need for that, largely because many consumers wrongly assume that decanting is more technical than it is (see the introduction for advice on the process).  The flavours of an unfiltered LBV are far more resonant and complex than the filtered ones.
